Touring Tutus for Queenstown
10 Mar 2009 - Sophie
Bringing dance to the people of New Zealand has always been important to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and 2009 is no exception with TOWER Tutus on Tour coming to Memorial Hall on Sunday 22nd March.
The company will present one performance and also give a company class during the TOWER Tutus On Tour to Queenstown this month.
The performance/s will show a mix of contemporary and classical ballet works presented by Lakes Leisure.
“It is always a pleasure to have Tutus perform in Queenstown and the Royal New Zealand Ballet are so accommodating when it comes to interacting with the local community” said Events Manager Karen Gemmell. “They love coming to the Southern Lakes and usually schedule two days off following the Queenstown event to relax and enjoy our local activities”.
“TOWER Tutus On Tour allows us a unique opportunity to bring home-grown dance to communities throughout New Zealand, while at the same time celebrating the beginnings of our ballet company,” says Gary Harris, Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
The Royal New Zealand Ballet began in 1953 by touring small towns throughout the country, and in those early days the community billeted the dancers.
“We are looking forward, once again, to dancing on your doorstep,” says Gary.
This years’ programme includes Christopher Hampson’s acclaimed work, Saltarello, as well as the work that puts the tutu in the tour – Holberg Suite.
Former RNZB dancer, Andrew Simmons, returns to make a new work entitled Through to You, and top Australian choreographer, Garry Stewart, joins us for the first time with his highly charged work Currently Under Investigation.
Inspired by the music of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, RNZB dancers Catherine Eddy and Brendan Bradshaw also bring their work, Koo Koo Ka Choo, to the stage.
Tickets are available at www.ticketdirect.co.nz, the Queenstown Events Centre, i-Site or by phoning 03 450 9005.
