New Sports Programme for Wakatipu Youngsters

A new Wakatipu programme designed to spark youngsters’ interest in sport is now open for enrolments.

Run by Lakes Leisure, the ‘All Sorts Sports’ programme is designed for children aged between four and seven.

It starts at the Queenstown Events Centre on 4 May and the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on 5 May and runs for 8 weeks at a cost of $45 per child.

The programme offers a variety of sports and covers a series of classes developed to work on motor skills such as running, jumping, hopping, skipping, throwing, kicking, and catching that will direct children into the type of sport they would like to play in the future.

It aims to develop confidence, perseverance and control and teaches the first steps towards playing a team sport by moving and communicating together.

Lakes Leisure programme coordinator Alana Talbot says that children who learn to enjoy a physical activity and sports at a young age are much more likely to remain active and benefit from a healthy lifestyle.

“All Sorts Sports is a stepping stone for young children to learn what sport is all about and hone their motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination. Our aim is to motivate children to take up sport and build it into their lifestyle for years to come.

“Children around this age are just starting to decide for themselves what types of sports they prefer. With this in mind, All Sorts Sports has been specifically set in a supportive, non-competitive environment where the emphasis is simply on the love and fun of sport, not winning.

“Whatever your children's active interests are, All Sorts Sports will give them plenty of fun and sporty activities to choose from.”
