open for fitness!

Alpine Health and Fitness is now open. The centre is a perfect training venue for your club, offering a full range of cardio and weight training equipment as well as Les Mills fitness classes starting 30 November.
Our Health and Fitness Manager Richie Heap is on hand to work with coaches to create event-specific programmes that will address particular areas and help give your team that extra edge. There are also physio and chiropractor services on site. Contact Richie on 03 442 9126 or email richie@lakesleisure.co.nz.
The opening of the centre completes the community’s vision for an integrated multi-purpose health, fitness, sports and events facility in one location. This will greatly assist our ability to attract regional, national and international sports teams to train at the Queenstown Events Centre throughout the year.
Alpine Health and Fitness Centre is open 6am-9pm weekdays and 8am-8pm on weekends. Click for a fitness class timetable and to join up. Email the team at fitness@lakesleisure.co.nz or call 450 9117 for information and motivation.
price changes out to public consultation
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is consulting on the future pricing of recreation and sports facilities around the region. Many of you will have contributed to the workshops hosted by QLDC last month in Queenstown and Wanaka.
The submissions period is still open so don’t miss out on the opportunity to have your say.
QLDC will consider adopting the policy at a future council meeting which could result in significant discounts for various sports groups including juniors and charitable organisations. Pending the council’s decision, Lakes Leisure will be tasked with implementing the new fees and charges.
We will keep you informed of developments through this newsletter and how any changes might affect use of Lakes Leisure facilities. Click here to download a copy of the draft policy.
coffee catchup
Our coffee mornings are proving a great way for us to share our news and listen to your opinions and ideas as users of our sports facilities. Join us for our next informal gathering at 9am on 27 November in the Queenstown Events Centre’s upstairs mezzanine function room.
We’ll issue a summary of the discussion after the meeting for the benefit of those that couldn’t make it. Click here to read the notes from our first coffee catchup on 2 September,
Please contact Karen Gemmell in advance to let her know you’ll be coming and also to flag up any issues you’d like to discuss – email karen@lakesleisure.co.nz or call 03 450 9105.
summer of cricket
Bring your team down to the Queenstown Events Centre this summer for a great line up of national and international cricket action.
Our water safety mascot Paddles was very excited to meet BLACKCAPS captain Daniel Vettori when he visited the Events Centre during last week’s warm-up match between Pakistan and New Zealand A.
We also have the Under 19 World Cup from 15-20 January when many future Test stars will be out to catch the eye.
Other matches to look out for are:
• Otago v Wellington (4 day), 3-6 December 2009
• Otago v Wellington (1 day), 8 December 2009
• Australia v New Zealand Women’s ODI, 3 March 2010
• Otago v Canterbury (4 day), 12-15 March 2010
These events help us build our international profile and attract further events to Queenstown. Come along to show your support and enjoy a great day out!
otago rugby membership offer
Otago Rugby Union has launched its 2010 season membership offer that includes all Highlanders Super 14 matches at Carisbrook, Otago NPC games plus the last ever test match at Carisbrook.
All Blacks v Wales on Saturday 19 June will be the last game played on the ‘Brook’s hallowed turf before test match rugby is transferred to the new Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
There are five membership categories with a range of benefits to suit every rugby fan. These include the option to choose your seat in the new stadium and preferential ticket access for the 2011 World Cup.

Remember that Queenstown Events Centre is hosting the Super 14 match between Highlanders and Western Force on 10 April. This is not part of Otago Rugby’s membership package but you can grab your tickets easily through TicketDirect.
turf
Maintaining the standard of our pitches is a highly skilled job where experience and training counts. The turf team play an essential role in maintaining our reputation for hosting national and international events like Test-quality cricket and Super 14 rugby.
It’s not all about the big games at the Events Centre. Good playing surfaces are required for all levels of group sport across the Southern Lakes – from practice wickets and number 2 fields for club games to running tracks and outdoor events areas. Correct maintenance keeps pitches true and safe for all users.
That’s why we’re grateful for your patience during the recent eight-week turf renewal programme. New grass is growing well in the spring sunshine which will ensure consistently excellent pitches over the coming season.
winter bookings schedule
Finally, a quick heads-up that winter booking forms will be out before Christmas. Even though summer is not quite here, now is a good time to start thinking about your requirements for the colder months.
The main winter season runs from early June to September but some pre-winter training starts as early as February, and popular time slots do get booked out early. Look out for more details in the next issue of ‘Catch All’ when we’ll also be releasing booking forms.
